Arranging gas and electricity

This is general guidance only. The person who will be responsible for the bills should contact the supplier directly when moving in.

Record the opening readings

Take clear photographs of every meter on the day the tenancy starts. Keep the photographs and send the opening readings to the supplier.

Find the current suppliers

For gas, use the official Find My Supplier service. For electricity in the Harrogate area, use Northern Powergrid's electricity supplier lookup.

Open the accounts

Contact each supplier with your name, property address, tenancy start date and opening meter reading. Ask the supplier to confirm the account opening in writing.

HLS can confirm tenancy dates where appropriate, but cannot open or manage a tenant's utility account.
